12 Feb Getting To Know Your XR Community
With more talk and trends appearing on augmented and virtual reality, it’s natural to get curious about the technology and want to get involved. XR or extended reality, covers everything from augmented reality, virtual reality, 360-degree videos and mixed reality. Being in the XR industry ourselves, we’re around it daily and understand that more people would like to be familiar and discover more about XR. We’d like to use this opportunity to bridge the gap and give a few recommendations on how you can get involved with the XR community. Here are some suggestions to help get you going.
Meet Like-Minded Individuals in the Atlanta Area
If you are local to Atlanta, one great start would be the XR Atlanta monthly Meetup, held at Axis Replay and locations around the metro Atlanta area. This meetup gives both XR enthusiasts, industry professionals, and inquiring minds an opportunity to talk about, learn and educate each other on what is going on in the industry. With over 1,300 members and counting, the group welcomes all who are interested in XR. The meetups include showcases, workshops, networking, panels, and guest speakers. Each month focuses on a different topic with experts that are willing to take time at the end for Q & A.
Experience Virtual Reality
Revery VR Bar is an option if you would like to get a group of friends together and play some of the most popular virtual reality games. Revery is the nation’s first full bar to incorporate VR, therefore it is for adults only. You can see what your friend in VR is seeing on the screen that’s located in your semi-private seating area.
For a more age-friendly option, visit The VOID. With locations across the US, including one location in Atlanta, you can experience the most immersive virtual reality out there. When you enter, you received a headset and haptic vest. As you walk through the environments in virtual reality the physical space you’re in changes temperature and smells are emitted to match what you are seeing in the virtual world. Several members of the Futurus team have gone multiple times to try out the different experiences and they’ve enjoyed it each time. The VOID rotates their experiences, so you will want to see what’s currently being featured before going. But my guess is, whatever the experience might be you won’t be sorry.
For those looking for a spot near Duluth, check out Nexus VR. They offer party and event packages with lots of gaming options.
ISimu VR is another VR arcade option. They host parties, corporate and private events. They have a large variety of games that can accommodate all audiences.
Online Communities and Newsletters
Another place to find helpful information and events are in newsletters. Inside AR and Inside VR are great ones to read to hear the latest and greatest in technology. Looking for more? There are online communities on Reddit, Facebook, LinkedIn, and many more places if you search for topics you are interested in. By reading and engaging with people who are enthusiastic about the industry you can become more knowledgeable about the current trends and explore what the technology has to offer.
There’s always something to learn, even for us. We’re constantly exploring innovative ways to contribute to the community and help all generations understand more about this exciting technology. We hope that this has been helpful to your XR journey and that you will come say hello at our next event.
