Dixie® Cups

Augmented Reality
Challenge

Parents will tell you that getting kids to brush for a full two minutes can be a difficult task. Dixie® wanted to create a fun, interactive experience to get kids excited about brushing their teeth. With augmented reality enabled Dixie® Cups, kids can learn space facts or fight off molar monsters, and as a throwback to the classic, riddle cups with an animated twist!

Solution

Georgia-Pacific’s Dixie® Cups brand partnered with Futurus to create augmented reality experiences on Blippar, a mobile AR platform. With AR incorporated into the product’s packaging and design, users could scan these cups while brushing their teeth to learn space facts, fight off molar monsters, or, as a throwback to the classic riddle cup, complete challenging brain teasers with an animated twist!

Scanning each cup triggers one of three different AR experiences.

Molar System

Select a rocket and blast off into outer space, triggering the start of a two-minute toothbrush timer. While you brush, the app presents exciting tidbits about our solar system. Molar System concludes when you smile for the camera and the rocket lands down on a planet.

Molar Monsters

Scan the cups and smile for the camera. Brush for a full two minutes to fend off the likes of D. Kay, Spec, Krum, and Stiki for two full minutes, you’ll earn a golden molar coin that you can spend on new digital brushes.

Riddle Romp

Challenge your IQ with Riddle Romp. Inspired by the riddle-laden Dixie® Cups of old, these cups spring to life in augmented reality with tricky brain teasers.

Results

These augmented reality Dixie® Cups bring much-needed entertainment to the teeth brushing routine. Via journeys through space, battles with monsters, and riddles that test your wit, augmented reality Dixie® Cups transform a chore into something that kids look forward to. We found that users stayed an average of 3+ minutes and were very likely to return to these three experiences; Molar System averaged 5.7 Blipps per user, Molar Monsters averaged 7.2 Blipps per user, and Riddle Romp averaged 5.3 Blipps per user. With a quarter of a million users and over 4,863 total hours of engagement, these cups have undoubtedly instilled an appreciation for dental health within a generation of children.
