Delta Air Lines

Virtual Reality
Challenge

Delta employees are flown to Minneapolis to perform deice training each year in July. These critical employees may not see conditions that require deicing procedures until 3-4 months later. Delta sought out a proactive way to integrate training throughout the year. The solution had to scale to meet their global training needs and they turned to virtual reality.

Solution

The virtual reality deicing training experience simulates many variables that employees encounter, including bucket type, containment type, time of day, aircraft type, and environment. The simulation also incorporates animations and effects like vehicle traffic and hot steam to ensure deicers are met in VR with realistic conditions.

Results

When using traditional training methods, Delta certified 2-3 people per day, whereas in virtual reality, Delta can perform proficiency checks for 150 employees in the same amount of time.
