19 Jan JLG: Making an Augmented Reality App
2020 was undoubtedly a year where we reflected on our challenges and celebrations. Futurus recently celebrated the launch of a global development effort, and we are pleased to show off our team’s hard work. The project – JLG AR – is an augmented reality (AR) app that we created with JLG Industries. The app is designed to provide more efficient on-site management tools for the JLG team and their customers. The app includes Machine Visualization, Accessory Visualization, Decal Viewer, Operation Guidance, and Annual Inspection Assistance. These tools provide JLG customers easy access to view machine and accessory options, perform inspections, and understand machine decals and controls all while using augmented reality technology.
Our CEO, Annie Eaton, recently spoke to JLG’s Director of Product Development – Connected Solutions, Korry Kobel, to talk about their process throughout the project. They discuss considerations when developing immersive technology, unexpected benefits, and what drives good, collaborative technology production.
How did you become the leader of this initiative within your organization?
We had talked about doing something like the AR app in an internal meeting. I just had the luck of the draw when I spoke up and said, “here’s what makes sense to me,” which led to me being chosen as the person to lead the project. I had a vision, and that was the beginning.
What has been your customer feedback?
The Machine Visualization tool would be the one that has received the most positive feedback, and everyone seems to want more. More machines, more accessories, more filters, which is a great problem to have.
What is something you learned about AR that you did not know before the development of this project?
We learned a lot working with the Futurus team. You walked us through what was needed to make AR apps work and helped us apply what we were trying to do and how we can fit this all together. We had general plans, but we definitely learned as we went. With your help, Annie, we were able to piece this together to meet our goals. There were also benefits to growing and learning with a smaller company like Futurus. The team was able to leverage technology to solve a specific problem for our customers.
Are there any unintended benefits of the AR app that you’ve uncovered since launch?
JLG AR gives us something exciting to talk about and share with our customers. The app opens doors to conversations we would not typically have, specifically in the technology space. It helps to force people to think about JLG and our products in a different context. We want to be continuously working to combine our products with the latest technology, not just saying we should be doing it.
One of the key benefits, is when our internal team members can use the visualization modules to help a customer see if a product fits their needs. It helps us to help our customers. There is a sense of pride; that we were able to provide this to our team and customers.
Is there a favorite feature that team members enjoy?
They enjoy being able to see the machines in front of them. The service people love the annual inspection tool; they love being able to pull up the reports and have all the steps in front of them. It makes it easy for them, and they can be more productive with their time. The decal viewer is another one I thought would be more popular, but being that it is an in-person interaction, I am sure it will be a favorite once we get around to doing more in-person jobs.
This project has been an incredible experience for the Futurus team. We were able to take a customer’s idea and bring it to life. We could not be happier with the product we created, and the relationship we built with JLG along the way.
