Augmented Reality Makeup Try-On Apps

If you know me, you know I love makeup. I’ve spent many hours over the years shopping, looking for and applying makeup. It’s always been fun and therapeutic for me. Working for a technology company, we stay in the know with the latest and greatest gadgets, headsets, games, and even the newest development when it comes to augmented reality apps for makeup! I have a couple of makeup filter apps on my phone and always love to hear about more companies expanding and creating AR features for customers to try on their products. So, when our Director of Operations, Deigratia mentioned that Amazon now offered a “Try On” feature on some makeup brands, I had to give it a go. I compared to another one of my favorite makeup apps – YouCam Makeup. Here are some of my takeaways:

Amazon Makeup Try-On

  • The live option tracking was a bit off, I switched over to photo and it looked more realistic
  • I wish there was a list of the brands/products that you can try on virtually
  • You can’t reuse the same picture to try on more products from other brands
  • Only available with Android as of now with an iOS release later this year

YouCam Makeup Try-On

  • It automatically puts a filter on your face
  • Nose/Chin/face alterations available if you’re into that
  • Tracking was better than other makeup apps
  • There are a lot of options for foundation, blush, bronzer, eyebrows, eyeshadow, lips
  • I like that you can apply what you like, then have the option to purchase the products

The one feature that I would like to see in the future is the ability to accurately match a foundation/concealer to your skin tone. This would be especially helpful for products that are only available online. Another use for these virtual try-on apps is being able to have your son/daughter test out makeup looks and learn about where the makeup is applied to the face. For example, the YouCam Makeup app had a blush option that gave you four different places on where you could apply blush.

Overall, I love these kinds of apps and find them to be very helpful and fun. Whether you’ve been into makeup for years or are just wanting to broaden your horizons and have a little fun with your face, the makeup meets AR has done amazing work in providing us with great options and I look forward to seeing what they do next.
