Meet Shelby Vecchio, Designer and Animator

Meet Shelby Vecchio, Designer and Animator

Join us in welcoming Shelby Vecchio to the Futurus team! Shelby is our resident Designer/Animator and today we’re learning more about her background and hobbies outside of work.

How did you get into design/animation?

When I was a kid I used to create digital shorts with my sister and friends. I always seemed to take the lead and I really enjoyed the process of putting it together. I usually was the one who would direct, shoot, and edit the shorts. With this excitement and tools, I began to create very simple claymation. This was the first time I experimented with animation. In college, I was re-introduced to claymation and utilized it in some studies. The further I got in my studies the more animation mediums I was able to experiment and play with, ranging from stop-motion, 2D motion graphics, and basic character animation.

I have been designing before I knew what “design” was. Whether it involved miscellaneous items, clothing, or a pen to paper – I was creating some sort of composition. Over time the more I learned, the more I fell in love with the concepts and principles of design. I also enjoy breaking those rules. I see it as another medium to express thoughts that may be too abstract for words.

What kind of projects do you work on in your free time?

I work on various art projects in my spare time. The mediums vary from fine painting, paper sculpture, graphic design, and sometimes body paint! I love to learn new ways to create, but also work in mediums I have been practicing from a young age.  I have been fortunate to display some of my work around Atlanta.

If I am not behind a brush, computer mouse, or glue gun, I am usually out and about Atlanta, or hiking on a local trail. I am currently training for a Tough Mudder.

Do you have any favorite AR or VR experiences?

I am new to the VR world, so my experiences are minimal (one reason I am excited to join the Futurus team to learn more!) I was never quite good at shooting games, but for some reason, I am decent at Superhot. I really enjoy the simplicity of the aesthetics and almost “puzzle-like” style of figuring out how to get to the next level.

My other favorite is Tilt Brush in VR. As an artist, it is quite mind-blowing to be able to paint in 3D space. I think the possibilities are endless, which brings a whole new level of “blank canvas”. Having studied 3D animation, I have some background in 3D modeling. Designing via mouse/Wacom tablet could contribute some limitations to outputting creative ideas. You have to get creative when making certain things, but with this game, it is like you can stream exactly what you conjure up in your mind into space!

What are some of your favorite spots in Atlanta to grab a bite to eat?

There are so many! My favorites change frequently, but I usually frequent Barcelona, Jack’s pizza, or Babs in Midtown.

Tell us about your dogs, Annie and Joey!

Annie is from Asheville, NC. She is a miniature pinscher and chihuahua mix.  Joey is from the Atlanta Humane Society! He is a miniature pinscher and manchester terrier mix. We get asked all the time if they are related, since they look like twins, but it was really a coincidence. Joey is young and very playful, but Annie has more of a feline behavior, I come to you demeanor. I guess opposites attract!

Fun Fact: I drive a cherry red mini cooper.
